Li Chevalier & Olivier Kosta-Théfaine

Li Chevalier, Franco-Chinese artist, was born in 1961 in Beijing. She graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design London in 2007. Graduated from Sciences Po Paris [CEP Promo 86]. DEA in Political Philosophy from Paris Sorbonne 1991.

Since 2011, two major paintings of the artist decorate the reception room of the French Embassy
Embassy in Beijing, alongside works by Zao Wouki and Chu Tequn.

Li Chevalier works on large or monumental canvases rather than rice paper and incorporates a textured surface as well as pigments, chips, minerals, sand as well as paper collage and calligraphy.

Li Chevalier has embarked on a quest to expand the expressive powers of ink painting. She minimizes the use of brushes, magnifying the expressionist quality of water’s lyricism. Li Chevalier likes to explore the fluidity and subtlety of ink and wash. She avoids realistic representations without pushing her art to total abstraction. She adopts naturally curved forms rather than hard angles.

Olivier Kosta-Théfaine makes the detour of the codes of the city a new and delightful aesthetic exploration. A claimed suburbanite, he is an explorer of the margins. This artist makes lie our obviousnesses on the city.

Their retranscriptions by atypical and diverted processes give to his work an absolutely malicious tone. Olivier Kosta-Théfaine wonders about the social evolution with the passing of time. He works the material with a “destructive” technique. The burning of the surface of the paper with various tools such as the lighter or the hot tip also testifies to the fragility of the moment and of the material with strong emotional power.

The vision of these landscapes.
