Peter Donders was born in 1965 in Leut, Belgium. He is the son of a carpenter who was confined to a wheelchair for life because of polio. After primary school in Maas-Mechelen, he attended the well-known technical school in Maaseik and graduated as a furniture maker at the age of 22. Immediately after graduation, Peter Donders became a self-employed carpenter. Therefore he experimented with special shapes and materials at an early stage.
Then in 1999, he decided to combine his traditional carpentry techniques with 3D design. He is a self-taught artsit and he has become a true reference in the field. Indeed he now teaches 3D printing design at international conferences and at the SYNTRA school in Brussel, Belgium.
In 2000 he planned and designed the temporary construction of the theatre for the musical Grace in Amsterdam.
His creations challenge the possibilities of traditional woodworking. The artist challenges the forms in new ways.
Peter Donders’ ‘C-Stone’ and ‘C-Bench’ are machine-made from a single carbon cord that has been guided around a temporary mandrel. The result is an airy but solid structure, described by Rob Cassy (The Garden Design Journal) as ‘3D calligraphy’.
Many other revolutionary designs in various shapes and materials followed, especially for furniture and jewellery.
