Racso J, or Racso Jugarap was born in the Philippines in 1989. The self-taught artist now lives and works in Belgium, and has done so since 2015.
The artist Racso J has made his home country, Belgium, the incubator of his research. His wire installations embody in a unifying gesture his origins. Indeed as a son of a jeweler, we perceive the principles of setting in his works. We can see his thoughts on the future, the material and time.
The obvious poetry of his work contrasts with the harshness of his material: it is precisely here that his research is concentrated. From meticulousness comes strength and in the fluidity of a movement made of shadows and steel, a poetic, light and luminous dance awakens. The artist gives to experience the suspended beauty of a moment of grace.
Artist’s statement
“The concept of my pieces are from the skeletons of my old works, the woven grids with the use of metal wires, conceived from the sensations I feel, my childhood memories, and my culture.
Metal wire, for me, is very malleable on its own, but if bound or woven together, it can give a solid structure – if you treat it like fabric, you can do almost anything with it.
My process is slow and repetitive that I use it as a meditation, a mantra. Curves have always been an element in my works. For me, curve shapes express fluid movement, and they could be dynamic. It depends on how much the curve is in the object; the less curve, the calmer.”
