After his horticulture diploma obtained in 1958 and his military service completed in 1961, he began to create works from forbidden directions and flower pots filled with cement and used white ceramic tiles with black joints. These will quickly become the trademark of the artist. The strong signs of society will be inscribed in his work.
His work
He had his first solo exhibition at the Jean Larcade Gallery in Paris and in 1966 at Mathias Fels. Jean-Pierre Raynaud participated in the IX Biennial of São Paulo in Brazil in 1967. He is very quickly called to exhibit all over the world. In 1975, he made the stained glass windows of the Abbey of Noirlac.
He tries to highlight the relationship between the mental world and the real world since 1963, with his “psycho-objects” of white and red color, which associate some simple elements
Icy and distant, his work is presented as a vision of the world, cruel certainly, but located beyond the anguish and the violence. Man is absent, and “nothing here”, as Alain Jouffroy wrote, “is expressed, but everything is shown…”.
The red flowerpot filled with cement, exhibited in large numbers and realized in various scales, becomes a sign devoid of any expressiveness.
His career
In 1969, he began to build his own house in La Celle Saint-Cloud, which is his main work of art. He decided to destroy it in 1993. He exhibited the pieces of the house in surgical containers at the CAPC museum of contemporary art in Bordeaux. Michelle Porte’s film, La Maison, a testimony to the event, will be screened on this occasion. He represented France at the Venice Biennale the same year and won the honorary prize.
In 1972, Raynaud began using four-color process to reproduce, on life-size panels, the components of the Renault van and road signs.
In 1974, Raynaud opened his blockhouse to the public, entirely lined with white tiles. For the Cistercian abbey of Noirlac, he designed 55 windows and seven rosettes of colorless glass.
Raynaud’s preferred terrain is public spaces, as well as the placement of collection objects.
