In most of his works the same motif recurs: flowers, a reference to his Chinese roots.
These figures, made of Jingdezhen porcelain, are inspired by “Luochan” or “arhat”, a monk disciple of Buddha. They are placed on bowls from Song kilns, recovered from a market in the city.
The sculptures are installed on transparent crystal balls, which give an impression of levitation and weightlessness, evoking meditation.
Bamboo, one of China’s favourite subjects, is also a prominent motif in Xiao Fan’s work. The plant is a symbol of integrity, humility and righteousness.
In his work, the artist shows its simplicity, elegance and resistance. But he also gives it a spiritual meaning, the “Zhong Yong”: the search for the right balance, a principle of Confucian philosophy.
