Niele Toroni, who calls herself a painter rather than an artist, describes her work simply: « Since 1966, I have been using flat brushes, 5 cm wide, which I apply to a given surface at regular intervals of 30 centimetres.»
Whether it’s a painting, a loose canvas in fabric or oilcloth, or on the wall itself, the artist’s approach is to « fill in everything that’s white and create form without any preconceived or prior ideas, simply to mark the place, to notice it, and thus to reveal it ».
Recent monographic exhibitions devoted to Niele Toroni have been held at the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris (2015), the Swiss Institute in New York (2015) and the Villa Pisani Bonetti in Vicenza (2011). Her work is presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the “Accrochage” exhibition at Punta della Dogana (2016).
